Sending Us Your Material

Booksmart Studio offers two methods for clients to transfer their digital files to us.

Method 1

Place your files in a Dropbox folder and share the link with info@booksmartstudo.com.

When sending an InDesign document you MUST package all fonts, images, & page layouts in a single folder. The quickest & most efficient method for doing this is by using the package option. For more help with packaging your files please visit the Tutorials section of our website.

Please Note:

* We remove images from our Dropbox account immediately after they have been downloaded to prevent theft of imagery.

**For larger volume customers we have an application you can install on your computer that will allow you to drop your files into the application window and it will automatically upload the images to our Asset Manager website. Please inquire with Booksmart Studio to obtain this software.

Scanning

Scanmate F10 xyz Flatbed Scanner 

This scanner allows us to scan oversized film & originals  with an optical resolution on all areas of the scanning surface of 5400 spi. We are able to scan any film size & originals with sizes up to 12″—16.5″ inches.

Printing

 

IRIS 3047 & 3024 

We are still utilizing our IRIS printers to create true Giclée prints for our artists and photographers. We at Booksmart Studio, Inc. still believe in the aesthetic and quality of the IRIS printers. We work with many artists still willing to pay the price for the quality of the IRIS printers. If you are one of those artist please inquire about our ability to produce your IRIS Giclée editions. 

The Iris printer is an inkjet printer designed to interface with digital prepress systems to produce a hard copy that shows what the exact image will look like before the job goes to press. Such prepress output devices are used to check the image and for critical color match on industrial printing jobs such as commercial product packaging and magazine layout. Their output is also used to check color after mass production begins. Iris printers use a continuous flow ink system to produce continuous-tone dot free output. The paper used in the machine is mounted on a drum rotating at 150 inches per second.[1] Unlike most ink jet printers which fire drops only when needed, the IRIS printer’s four 1-micrometer glass jets operate continuously under high pressure, vibrated by a piezoelectric crystal to produce drops at a 1 MHz rate. The droplets are given an electric charge so that the ones that are not needed to form the image are deflected electrostatically into a waste system.

 

Epson 9600 

We currently print on two Epson 9600 printers with a maximum print width of 43.75″ and a maximum length, (depending on your paper) of either 39′, 49′, or 100′.

 

Epson 4000 Series (4000, 4800, & 4880)

We currently have (3) Epson 4000 printers, (3) Epson 4800 printers (1) Epson 4880 with a maximum print with of 16.75″ and a maximum length (depending on your paper) of either 39′, 49′, or 100′. The Epson 4000 Series printers are used primarily for our book productions because the paper tray and feeding ensures proper registration of the books signatures.

 

 

Epson 3800

We currently own one Epson 3800 primarily utilized for alternative digital printing and our workshops.

We currently have one Epson 7800 for limited edition prints.

We currently have two iPF5000’s for limited edition prints & books

The iPF5000 printer is designed to satisfy the most critical printing needs of all types of digital artists. We currently have one iPF6100 for limited edition prints.

Canon iPF6300

We currently have one iPF6300 for limited edition prints.

Equipped with LUCIA EX 12 color inks, high-precision printing modes and an Accounting Manager feature, the iPF6300 is the ideal solution for the graphic, fine art, photography and proofing markets.

With the LUCIA EX ink set, expect exquisite photographic output, even more expressive, crisp blacks, smooth color gradations and the capability to reproduce the finest details in the shadow areas of photographs. And with the Print Plug-in for Photoshop, now with support for Adobe CMM, users can process images in 16-bit. Developed to expand Canon’s array of media options, the Media Configuration Tool allows users to input profiles for third party media.

We currently have (2) iPF9000 for limited edition prints.

The iPF9000 printer is designed to fulfill the needs of any digital artist looking to create captivating images from capture to output. The 12-color pigment ink system was designed to expand the spectrum of color for environments from photography to design, to take advantage of within their output. The iPF9000 incorporates the new 12-color pigment ink system with LUCIA™ inks, and the new L-COA controller, which intelligently processes the data directing the rapid printing process. Combined with Canon’s dual print head design and the most ink nozzles per color in the industry (as of May 2006), the L-COA controller helps achieve print speeds of under three minutes for 16.5″ x 23.4″ (A2) size prints with 1200 x 1200 dpi resolution on a glossy photo paper. Inks

IRIS printers 

We use Pinnacle Gold inks in our IRIS printers to maximize color gamut and archival qualities on all of our substrates (paper).

 

 

Canon, Epson & HP Inkjet printers 

We use the manufacturers ink for the respective printers. We use the manufacturers ink instead of saving money because we know exactly what we are going to get with every replacement cartridge. Another reason is we know the true archival qualities of these ink sets because all of the major archival testing is conducted with the manufacturers ink sets.  

More Information

We try to provide tools that allow an artist to create their important work. We truly believe in the collaboration between the artist & printmaker, due to the fact that in the end, it is the artist’s work. We take a very creative approach to working with our artists –  in fact we are more of an assistant, rather than a final decision maker. We want to guide the artist with information that is critical to the creative process. Our relationships are very dynamic and are constantly allowing for new ideas to emerge throughout the entire process.

Booksmart Studio’s philosophy is deeply rooted in the belief that this collaboration between the artist and the printmaker results in the finest work. We will not sacrifice this collaboration for the quick buck, as we define ourselves as fine edition printmakers. This model comes from the traditional printmaking background that Booksmart Studio’s owner holds with his MFA in Printmaking & Book Arts. The digital fine edition influence comes from his MS in Electronic Publishing; the combination has created a unique perspective on printmaking (digital or traditional) and the art of books. Often, our artists will start printing their edition and quickly realize the potential of the artistic process in creating a fine edition book, which will compliment their print work.

Printing Technology

We have the widest range of printers for creating fine edition books & prints; from IRIS 3047 & 3024 printers to the latest Canon, Epson, & HP wide format printers. Not to mention we also have our own HP Indigo with in-house  ink mixing capabilities. Besides the extensive list of technology we also offer the largest and most extensive list of paper and materials to print on.

 

What is Fine Edition Printing?

You will see on our website that we often refer to the idea of “Fine Edition Printing” over and over. The reason is the artists and photographers we are working with typically are producing edition work and we guarantee the edition will be produced with the same standards whether it is print #1 or print #50. In this economy we very rarely have a client that will produce the full edition in one production run. This is the reason we create both AP (artist proofs) & PP (printers proofs) before we start the edition. These proofs are used by both the artist & in-house to ensure the quality matches from one print to the next. The substrates we work with are not substrates that we anticipate disappearing to ensure we can complete and edition. In the event that we hear a paper is being discontinued we contact our artist using that particular paper to see if the wish to full-fill the edition or simply close the edition at the current print. Our service is meant to allow the artist to print as sales or exhibitions require a print. All files are backed up on one of our (3) 24 Terrabyte RAID 5 servers with redundant back-up to ensure your files are ready for print when you demand. For an extra fee of $2 per print ordered, we can also keep track of your running edition numbers for you in-house. This information will also be backed up to our RAID server as well. A few of our artist are too busy creating new work or trying to sell work to concentrate on the nitty-gritty business aspect of creating edition artwork. 

 

Philosophy

As a smaller digital printmaking studio you will speak directly to the printmaker who is working with your artwork throughout the entire process.

All of our digital specialists/printmakers are practicing artists who understand the anxiety in turning over your passion and work to another person for completion. We know what it means to be an artist and how inspirational artwork is to the artist. Having an artisan available to fully respect the artist’s vision and produce a final piece of work that captures the artist’s idea or concept is unique. The entire process of creating digital prints is a collaboration between the artist and the printmaker; the work of the printmaker ensures that the artist’s vision is fully expressed in the final prints. This is why we invite our clients to participate in every step of the process if they so wish.

We are proud that prints made at Booksmart Studio have been exhibited in galleries and museums all over the world. When the artist’s work is completed and ready for display, the final review and sale of the work means a great deal to us. When the artist is successful, we are successful.
