• Without light, there is no color.
• The human eye is sensitive to light from approximately 380 - 780 nanometers.
• In terms of human color perception we are concerned with the visual spectrum only.

• Anyone that judges or asseses color should be tested for color deficiencies.
• The Ishihara and Farnsworth Munsell tests are both useful for testing individuals for color deficiencies.
• Color testing does not have to come from a doctor, tests are even available on-line.

• Color temperature is a way to describe how blue or red a light source is, it is measured in degrees Kelvin.
• Metamerism is a phenomena where two different colors may match or not match dependent on the light source they are viewed under.
• The color temperature of light sources used to evaluate color should be consistent as it influences our perception of color.

• A Color Model is simply a mathematical formula for describing color.
• RGB Color Model: Add Red, Green and Blue colors together to create white light, known as an additive color model. Example: Color Monitor
• CMYK Color Model: Cyan, magenta, yellow and black, ink or dye on paper. Add ink/dye and color is subtracted, known as subtractive color model. Example: Inkjet print.
• HSB Color Model: Control Hue, Saturation and Brightness. Used in many editing and scanning applications.
• CIELAB Color Model: Emulates normal human color vision and unlike the other color models noted here is device independent.

• The purpose of a managed color workflow or color management system is to provide color consistency and predictability throughout the entire workflow.
• Calibration is the act of tuning or bringing a device to a known standard.
• Characterization is the act of characterizing or describing how a device performs.
• The ICC (International Color Consortium) is a color standards organization.
• Color gamut is the range of color reproducible by a particular device.
• Profile: File that describes numerically the color characteristics of a device or color space.
• PCS: The profile connection space is the color space in which the color conversion or color remapping takes place.
• CMM: A color management module is the engine that converts color data from one profile or color space to another.
• Rendering Intent: The method used for remapping color values. There are 4 different rendering intents used in an ICC color managed workflow, Perceptual, Relative Colorimetric, Absolute Colorimetric and Saturation.
• Relative colorimetric is the best rendering intent choice for most digital image files.
• Color managed workflow goal is to produce consistent and predictable results.

• Colorimeter: A device used for measuring the quality of color, compares color to known values. Generally used for monitor calibration and profiling.
• Spectrophotometer: Measures spectral response of reflective material. Accurate tool used to read test target color patches for printer profile creation.
